Marianne & Leonard

Time travel to the magical island of Hydra in the 60s where love and music reigned supreme. Words of Love, a doco from Nick Broomfield, charts the relationship between Leonard Cohen and his "muse", Marianne Ihlen  a Norwegian transplant who inspired a slew of Cohen's inimitable songs.

Like real love, it's not straightforward. But this glimpse into their world and the counterculture of the era makes for a compelling watch.

Years later, before her passing, Marianne received the following note from Cohen. Perhaps proof that a connection can run deeper than the human experience lets on...

Dearest Marianne,

I'm just a little behind you, close enough to take your hand. This old body has given up, just as yours has too. I've never forgotten your love and your beauty. But you know that. I don't have to say any more. Safe travel old friend. See you down the road. Endless love and gratitude.
